Video games have been a huge part of my life ever since I was a little girl. And a few decades later, I've found that they've also become my personal life saver. Literally!
I was four years-old when my Nana started playing the Super Nintendo in the back room of our two story house. She'd mostly play her games in the evening after the chores were done and everyone else congregated in the living room to watch TV. As for me, I chose to forgo the prime time television in favor of sitting beside Nana and watch her conquer the many worlds of classic RPGs: Breath of Fire, Chrono Trigger, Illusion of Gaia, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Lufia and the Fortress of Doom, Secret of Evermore, Secret of Mana, and Final Fantasy (the latter would become my personal favorite!) During the day while Nana was busy with housework, she'd let me turn on the Super Nintendo and explore those fantastical worlds while fighting off monsters and connecting with the characters whom she had also grown to love.
Then one day, I clicked on the NEW GAME button.
With the creation of my own game file came the realization that these beautifully crafted and orchestrated games were actually a story book on a screen. As a sucker for fairy tales, I lost myself even deeper inside these digital worlds. Forget dollhouses and pretty dressed. I was hooking on games! My teen years consisted of me spending hours on my PlayStation or desktop computer as I spend hours grinding through levels and tearing up over the most heartfelt tales of friendship, love, loss, and victory.
After Nana passed away, I fell into a terrible depression that words cannot describe. It seemed as though so many people who knew me so well began to show their true colors after she died. It felt like they didn't love or respect me as much I thought, and my heart was more bruised than ever before in my whole life.
Then my best friend helped me buy a PlayStation 4.
We started playing Spider-Man every night after he came home from work, and suddenly I felt myself coming alive again. My gaming interests eventually branched out into other avenues like Assassin's Creed, BioShock, Grand Theft Auto, and Kingdom Hearts. This inspired me to start my own gaming channel where, like my Nana before me, I save the world under the cover of night after everyone else has gone to bed.
